Every QPilot Chat session has a maximum capacity, measured in tokens, based on the AI model you are using. This capacity has always existed as a limit on how much information a single chat session can hold, including your prompts, the content you reference, and the conversation itself.
The chat session capacity indicator makes this easy to see. It shows you how much of your session capacity you are using and what is contributing to it, so you can act well before any limit is reached.
In this guide you will learn:
- Where you will see the indicator
- Reading the capacity breakdown
- Reducing your session capacity usage
Where you will see the indicator
The indicator is available in QPilot Chat wherever you use it, whether in Hub Central in your web browser or in the QorusDocs Add-ins for Microsoft Office. If you are new to QPilot, see the Introduction to QPilot first.
Once your chat session uses more than 50% of its capacity, a percentage indicator appears alongside the chat controls (for example, ‘80%’). Below 50%, the indicator stays out of your way.
Reading the capacity breakdown
Hover over the indicator to open the ‘Chat session capacity’ breakdown, which shows:
- The total tokens used out of your session’s limit, with a progress bar of your overall usage.
- A category breakdown of what is contributing to that usage:
- Prompt: the text you have typed into the chat input.
- Content: files, documents, and other content you have added to the session.
- Chat history: the accumulated back-and-forth of your current conversation.
This gives you visibility into where your capacity is being used, rather than just knowing you are approaching a limit.
Reducing your session capacity usage
If your session capacity is running high, the breakdown tells you exactly what to trim. Depending on which category is contributing the most:
-
Prompt is high.
Shorten the text in your prompt input. Long or repeated instructions add up, so keep prompts concise and specific. -
Content is high.
Reduce the number of files you have added, or use smaller, more focused files. Large documents or many attachments quickly consume capacity. -
Chat history is high.
Start a new chat session. Long conversations accumulate history over time, and a fresh session clears this out.
Keeping an eye on your session capacity helps you avoid hitting the limit unexpectedly, and understanding the breakdown makes it easier to know exactly what to trim, whether that is your input, your content, or the conversation itself, so you can keep working without interruption.
